Dragon Asphalt are a leading manufacturer for asphalt in the UK. They provide an exceptional range of asphalts and surfacing materials for civil engineering and utilities projects across the nation.

At Dragon Asphalt their vision is to become a leader in sustainable asphalt production with a focus on reducing environmental impact.

As asphalt production can be energy-intensive, quantifying their impact is a critical step in mitigating it. It allows them to be open and transparent with their customers and suppliers and provide them with accurate data on their carbon footprint.

David Owen, Director at Dragon Asphalt states “By understanding our carbon footprint, we can undertake a target-based approach on our journey to net zero.”

They have also acknowledged that some competitors are taking similar actions, underscoring the importance of initiating their net zero journey.

The broader asphalt industry has also recognised the importance of reducing carbon emissions. The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has introduced “The Road Forward,” an initiative aiming for net zero carbon emissions in asphalt production and construction by 2050.

Although there is no current legislation for the reduction of carbon in the asphalt sector, there is pressure from local authorities, and they need to demonstrate their commitment to carbon reduction when bidding for local authority contracts.

Dragon Asphalt have already begun this journey by implementing these  decarbonisation projects to reduce their emissions:

  • They have upgraded all lighting at their sites to energy-efficient LEDs.
  • All their electricity is sourced from renewable, “Green” sources.
  • Source their raw materials locally wherever possible.
  • Two of their sites use LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas), which is one of the greenest fuels available to their industry.

Dragon Asphalt have not set a timeframe for reaching carbon neutrality or net-zero yet, as they want to understand their carbon footprint prior to setting targets.

They have partnered with Auditel to serve as their trusted advisors on the journey to net zero. Owen continues, “We are delighted to be partnering with Guy Longmore and Auditel, to gain an understanding of our carbon footprint and to formulate a target-based approach on our journey to net-zero.”

“Dragon Asphalt have recognised that assessing our carbon footprint demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.”
