Left to right: Derek Chisnall, Auditel Consultant; Dean Styger, Group Finance Director, Talacre Beach; and Daryn Dodge, Auditel Consultant
Group Finance Director, Dean Styger, was first introduced to Auditel in early 2007 when dissatisfaction with their incumbent utility consultants led them to seek new advisors.
From his very first meeting with Auditel consultants, Derek Chisnall and Daryn Dodge, Dean was comfortable with and impressed by the professionalism of the Auditel proposition. “We’d done a bit of research before inviting Derek and Daryn to meet with us and had been reassured by the Auditel client base and success stories on the website. Seeing prestigious organisations within the leisure industry, such as the Celtic Manor Hotel, gave us comfort that Auditel would understand our business needs, and that has certainly proved to be the case.”
Once engaged, Derek and Daryn’s first task was to sort out a £57,000 back bill from the incumbent energy supplier at one of the parks, dating back to 2004 when the Talacre Beach Leisure Group acquired it. A thorough analysis of the bill threw up a number of administration and billing errors which, combined with some tough face-to-face negotiations, brought it down to £21,000, an overall reduction of 63%.
Once this pressing issue was resolved, Derek and Daryn then moved on to negotiating electricity renewal contracts, a complex task involving multiple supplies, contract renewal dates and incumbent supplier relationships. However, by moving some sites to alternative suppliers and renegotiating with the incumbent supplier at others they have implemented total savings of over £100,000, a figure that will continue to rise as more supplies move onto the renewal prices as their current contracts expire. In addition, Derek has undertaken the paperwork to comply with notifying the Group’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) position and is managing the ongoing compliance issues for them. Initial site visits and appraisals for the future introduction of smart metering have also been organised and undertaken as part of the Group’s ongoing energy management policy.
However, Derek and Daryn’s remit goes far beyond just looking after the Group’s electricity expenditure: the Auditel service is a comprehensive management service, not just an exercise in cost cutting. As a result they have also introduced the Group’s marketing department to a unique form of text marketing that enables potential caravan purchasers to request information by texting a keyword – usually WALES – to a dedicated number. These keywords have now been incorporated into all the Group’s marketing literature, TV and radio advertising campaigns to enhance return on investment and Marketing Manager, Rachel Venables, is delighted with the results so far. Other business cost areas reviewed include water (no savings found so no charge made for the audit), merchant card fees (savings found but not yet implemented) and mobile communications (ongoing). As Dean says, “The initial attraction in dealing with Auditel was the ease of the relationship and, in particular, the ease of understanding the information presented. Utilities is a very complex business cost area but Auditel have demystified it for us and that’s very important in enabling us to manage our business effectively.”
